About the Title

  1. As American English has it, Fall means Autumn. And then Curve becomes the very human desire some people have in the autumn of their lives to fend off their inevitable end, and with varying degrees of desperation. Great thrashing and denial can follow.

  2. But Fall also describes what befell hapless Adam and Eve, the “Fall of Man” as Genesis puts it, where Curve then is a variation to that tragic arrangement.

When Adam and Eve ate the fruit of the tree of knowledge in the Garden of Eden – of the knowledge of good and evil – God punished them by driving them out of the Garden and into the world where they would be subject to sickness and pain (including specifically of childbirth) and eventual death.

• This is our God-given deserts, the bible seems to say. But for the first time, in our modern age, we can see beyond the exile it sets out for us, as we brandish our shiny tools and instruments at the sky.
